Article from the Boston Herald about the Blue Jays

"You thought the Rays were tough?

From the Wrong Team, Wrong Time Department, it’s duck-and-cover time: the Blue Jays are in town.

Besides playing better than any team in baseball right now and already giving the Red Sox [team stats] more than they can handle this season, the Blue Jays are the last team the Sox want to face over the next four games and three days.

If you thought that losing 2-of-3 to Tampa Bay was a bummer, they arrived here after being swept by Toronto.

For the Rays, the Red Sox were a breeze compared to the Jays. For the Red Sox, the Jays are going to be a hurricane-sized force to deal with this weekend and next in Toronto.

“Overall, it’s their pitching. Their pitching is magnificent. You’re not going to beat them up,” said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon before floating out of town on a cloud Wednesday night. “And they play with a lot of, I don’t want to say overt enthusiasm, but there’s a lot of confidence about them right now. They’re not a rah-rah group at all, they’re pros. They keep coming after you. Their pitchers permit them to wait and wait, and if they get you, they get you. And they don’t make mistakes on defense, either.”

The Blue Jays’ staff ERA of 3.51 is the lowest in baseball. Their 13 complete games (eight from Roy Halladay) lead the majors as well, and their 1,079 strikeouts lead the American League. If that sounds like a bad recipe for a team like the Red Sox that managed only two runs in 14 innings Wednesday, nine runs in their last 31 innings, then your tastebuds do not lie.

With a 4-7 record against the Jays this season, the Sox have found the one team besides the Angels (1-8) against whom they simply do not play or match up well. They strike out more against the Jays than against other opponents, they have been outscored, 66-31, in 11 games, and they score 2.81 runs a game against Toronto while averaging 5.28 runs on the season.

The Sox’ pitching obviously has to rise to the occasion. The offense has to levitate out of its cleats.

The Sox may or may not have J.D. Drew [stats] (back) at their disposal but this may not be the best opportunity for him to shake off the rust while on the disabled list.

And David Ortiz [stats], who has shown an uncanny ability to hit popups lately, how good is this encounter going to be? Ortiz has 41 at-bats against Toronto pitching this season and has one home run, two RBI, a .171 batting average and .261 on-base percentage.

Fine. Ortiz is having a rough year. Surely Dustin Pedroia [stats] is going to do some damage, right? Pedroia is hitting .182 with a .229 on-base percentage against the Jays, though he does have four home runs.

OK, then it’s going to be Kevin Youkilis [stats] to the rescue. He has hit Blue Jays pitching better than Pedroia, right? Correct, sort of. Youkilis has a .189 average with a .250 on-base percentage, plus one home run and three RBI.

Terrible starts from Alex Rios, Vernon Wells and Aaron Hill helped the Jays step out to a 47-48 first-half record. Once Cito Gaston took over as manager for Jay Gibbons on June 20, the Blue Jays won 43 of their next 70 games.

Before the Jays got hot, the Red Sox had already gotten burnt. Now everyone gets to find out if the Sox have the power to cool off the Blue Jays.

How do you like those odds?"
