What is the call?

Runner on first, and I'm pitching.
After I pitch, I back peddle a few steps. I can see that the ball is going to be hit to my left so I start going that way. Hitter hits a three hopper to our second baseman. It's not hit extremely hard so I'm going for it, I reach out my arm as I'm running that way, just missed it, right after it pasts me, I nearly collide with the runner going to second. It's not like I took another 3-4 steps, it was like right after I missed the ball, I look and the runner was right there. Was I in the baseline, probably yeah. We brushed shoulders and he stops running. Even if I didn't get in his way he would have been out because it was hit right to our second baseman and he threw to two to get the out.

Call at the time was out at second. The ump and I talked after the game and was second guessing himself that the runner should be safe.

Out at second or safe?

Sounds like a judgement call to me. If the ump thought your "interference" prevented the runner from beating the throw to 2 he may have called him safe but it seems like he figured he would have been forced out anyways and called him out.

As far as I know this is interference by the letter of the law and runner should be awarded second.

Runner should be out as the defender was making a play at the ball.

If it was in Kitchener, follow up question would be 'who knows the umpire better?'

The way he's describing it he missed the play, and took another step then made contact.
So now that he's no longer in the act of making a play (he missed), how can the runner be out?

I don't even think it was a step after the ball had past my glove. It was pretty much a bang bang play.

Tough one but once the ball is by you, you are no longer fielding the ball. The runner has to avoid you if you are fielding but that wasn't the case here. The ball was by you admittedly, then contact happened, albeit quickly. Obstruction, runner awarded second by the letter of the law IMO.
The call that I likely would have made is that there wasn't enough contact to warrant a dead ball and that the runner is out on the throw to 2....but I incorporate street rules whenever possible. He shouldn't have stopped running because you brushed shoulders.
Cheers,

A-Dawg,
what you meant to say was:
it is not playoff time yet..... so regular season means jack. call runner safe , next close or i don't know play goes the other way. then game is over both go to cooler and have a cold beer.

Ha! Something like that, Brother. I try to always make the right call and I am still learning, but stopping running because your shoulder got brushed is not going to be rewarded by me, playoffs or not.
The cooler and beer is one of the best parts!

Actually I pitch from the rubber. I'm pretty quick so after I pitch I take 4-5 quick steps back and ready to field (protect myself). This was an inside pitch to a lefty so I shifted over that way.

This was a round robin playoff game, didn't matter what the call was because we were up a lot and nearly mercied them.
