nothing was concrete there.

If the umpire can’t hold the bat by the knob with two fingers in the shape of a V then it is a
flare cone and an altered bat. So if it has a rubber knob and he can hold in the v is it still fine? Sounds to me?

That was one clinic, and is not consistent with the actual written rule, so YMMV.

That's in the rule book.

Sec. 1 RULE 1
ALTERED BAT: A bat is considered altered when the physical structure of a legal bat has been changed.
Examples of altering a bat are replacing the handle of the metal bat with a wooden or other type handle, or
inserting material inside the bat. A flare, cone grip or a painted bat is considered an altered bat.
EXAMPLE: If the umpire can’t hold the bat by the knob with two fingers in the shape of a V then it is a
flare cone and an altered bat.
EFFECT: The ball is dead, the batter is out and baserunners may not advance. The batter is ejected for
using an altered bat.
So if he can hold the bat inbetween his fingures should be ok, theres that 1/8 of knob exposed.

Wow, I can't believe something so subjective made it into a rule book. That is ridiculous. By that standard, a 26oz with some sort of cuff might be legal while a 27oz would be illegal, due how far apart or strong some umpires fingers are.

Also, most of us could hold basically any bat with any knob cuff between two fingers, if we wanted to. I could hold it with no knob. There's this thing called friction.

One umpire last year tossed my bat in SS with your supplied cone, was on a red knob DC so 1/8" shouldn't of been a problem. He was the only one that said it was illegal though.

Do umps carry rulers/measuring tapes? I would guess most people would over-estimate how much 1/8" is.

Grip rules are so effin stupid IMO.

What does it even do for safety at the end of the day?

They make us play in hurricane rainy weather where guys are throwing bats but worry about a grippy piece of rubber providing a taper and a better grip?

Same goes for the layers of tape rules etc.

Hard to care when you've played games where guys launch bats in the rain regardless of grips.

How about you put this much focus on everyone's bat barrels - Making a real difference to safety?
