What's the call...
Batter hits a pop fly over 3rd, into foul territory. Fielder sets up to catch and makes the catch in foul territory, but has one foot out of bounds. The ball stayed in foul territory the whole time.

Is it a fair catch?

Doesn't matter where the ball is. If the fielder has a foot out of play, he is out of play and can not make a catch.

if he lifts the foot that is out of bounds then it is an out but if that foot is on the ground he is out of play and not an out...I think.

Agreed... it all depends on if the guys foot was on the ground or not!... My understanding is if its in the air he is okay... kinda like diving out of play! But im assuming he had his foot on the ground out of play, so if so, its a foul ball I believe and a strike to the batter

This is what stated in NSA rule book....

9i. when the ball is outside the playing limits of the playing field. A ball is considered "out of play" when it touches the ground, person on the ground, or object outside the playing area.

so if the field has a foot outside of the playing field, it should be a dead ball, and not a out.

Yep putting the foot out of bounds makes it a dead ball. Too bad because he probably could have set up inbounds and still made the play.

Thanks guys, thats what we thought as well. We had runners on 1st and 3rd with none out. I was the runner on 3rd and saw the the whole play. Umpy (who is a good guy) was behind the plate to make the call. Get out there Blue!

when an umpire makes the effort to run out behind the plate, players appreciate that much more, even if the call didn't go their way....

Just to play Devil's advocate here with runners on 1st and 3rd assuming it was a 1 man system (and I realize it sounds like a shallow foul ball but) the umpire can only get out so far in case for any reason there was to be a play at home. It's kind of tough to say without being there to actually see the plat develop. (And before you say the runner isn't going anywhere do a few games as an umpire and you'd be amazed what happens that never should...)

That said if the catch was made and then his foot touched down out of play the batter is out and runners advance on the ball carried out of play.
