3 games so far and 3 different answers when asked about the strike zone... One actually said I pretend there is a mat and if it hits or its close its a strike. It's an easy move get a mat.

In our first game today at the pre game conference umpy told us that his strike zone is 4 inches on either side of the plate and he hates walks so anything close with 3 balls he would call a strike.

Then don't play, complain, or have anything to do with them ever again and everyone will be happy.

Our umps were fantastic this weekend, zero complaints. Really consistent and pleasant.

In the SPN tournaments I've been to, the umps do vary quite a bit in strike zone.

One ump in particular (in Octoberfest, a short old guy) was awful, his strike zone was all over the place. All teams that had him (yes, our opponents too) didn't like his inconsistency in the calls. That makes it tough to play when something that look to be sure strikes are called balls and something way off are called strikes. Those are the times a mat would solve the problem.

I have never understood why they donít use mats. It takes the guess work out of the umps hands. Iíve played in some leagues that use a wood board. Itís next to impossible for the ump to screw up calls on balls and strikes. You can hear the ďknockĒ on the board from the outfield most days.

Oh, that's good. I know at least one SPN tournament where mats are used -- Formosan Cup. Would be nice to see they use mats in all tournaments.

But what size mat is in the SPN rule?

I believe the new mat rule is using a 22"x44" mat
