Help With RSS

What can I do with RSS?

We wouldn't expect you to set up RSS just to see one site. The power of RSS is more obvious when you start subscribing to lots of sites. Then, instead of looking at 10 or 20 sites one by one, you can just check your RSS reader and see what's new on all the sites you normally visit. Quite the time saver.

You can use them to get newsfeeds from your favourite sports site (ahem... like this one!!), news on upcoming movies, DVD releases or just about anything.

Once you get started, it's like having your Favourites (or your Bookmarks) come to you! No need to go out and check for updates all the time.

In order to take advantage of RSS, you need to have an RSS reader that will grab the new information in our feed and alert you that it's there.

How do I get an RSS reader?

Most RSS readers are totally free, and are divided into two main groups: downloaded applications that you install on your computer and web-based readers that you can access from any computer on the web.

How do you get started?

Easy!

Download a RSS Reader first. This is free software that collects and organizes the RSS feeds. Here’s a good list of some popular RSS readers available to you for free.

I believe Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 already have RSS readers integrated within their browsers so if you are using either of those you are all set!.

Another one to consider is Sage which is a Firefox Extension that integrates nicely.

There are many other ones out there so once you've decided on a reader and you're all set up, here's all you have to do...

Right-click on any orange RSS button on a site, blog or news source that interests you. Start by right-clicking on the orange button below. Then...

Copy Link Location for Firefox or (Copy Shortcut for Internet Explorer), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader.

And that's it! You're subscribed.
